Biography: Dr. Abbas has more than 19 years
of experience in the semiconductor and telecom
industry and academia. Before joining LUMS
as a visiting faculty, he was a co-founder
of Teleware Systems that was later acquired
by PalmChip Corporation. During 2002-2006,
he served as the CEO of both Teleware Systems
and PalmChip Pakistan . He continues to
serve on the board of PalmChip Pakistan.
He is also on the board of a few other Pakistani
high-tech start-ups. He also provides consultancy
services to the telecom industry. At Centillium,
he was part of the team involved in an ADSL
and VoIP chip architecture and design. He
was also responsible for international technology
standards management for the company. At
Nortel, he was part of the team involved
in the development of Broadband Access products
that facilitated high date rate access over
twisted copper pair, co-axial cable, passive
optical fiber and wireless media. He was
also responsible for international technology
standards related to the relevant broadband
access technologies. To his credit are more
than hundred (100) technical contributions
in ITU-T, IEEE 802, ANSI, ETSI, ATM Form
and DSL Forum related to DSL and high speed
access technologies. He has numerous research
publications in industry journals and conference
proceedings mainly related to Mobile Wireless
Propagation. He holds 4 US patents while
another three (3) patent applications are
pending. Dr. Abbas is also Principal Investigator
for a PTCL R&D Fund Grant. Dr. Abbas
holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Electrical
Engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa,
Canada, and a B.S in Electrical Engineering
from UET Lahore.
