Research Seminar on Identifications of Recombination's in Sequences (IRiS)   January 5, 2009
Identifications of Recombination's in Sequences (IRiS)
11:00 AM, January 5, 2009

Dr. Asif Javed is a postdoctoral researcher at IBM TJ Watson research center. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2008. His research interests focus on design and analysis of algorithms. In particular his focus has been on statistical and computational population genetics.

Abstract: It is widely believed that modern humans first originated in Africa, from where they migrated and colonized the rest of the world. However we have limited knowledge of their migratory paths. Genographic project is a collaboration of National Geographic, IBM and research laboratories across the globe. The objective of this 5 year study is to shed more light on migratory history of human species using DNA analysis of thousands of individuals from around the world. This not only requires wetlab resequencing of the samples, but also sophisticated computational and statistical analysis. In this talk I will give an overview of the current phylogeographic methods; their advantages and limitations. Most of these studies focus on either the mitochondrial DNA (which is maternaly inherited) or the non-recombining Y-chromosome (which is paternally inherited). This makes the analysis tractable, but it ignores the information embedded in most of the genome. I will introduce a computational model which is designed with biological insights and hold promise of revealing the phylogeny of the genome. This is an NP-hard problem, but our approach comes with proven performance bounds.

SSE Student Orientation 2008   October 6, 2008
SSE welcomes its first class of scientists and engineers as LUMS grows into a multi-disciplinary university
October 6, 2008

LUMS School of Science and Engineering (SSE) welcomed its first batch of students – the Class of 2012 at the student orientation held over the course of two days, 6-7 October, 2008. This historic moment was exciting for the SSE team and students alike. For the SSE team it was a culmination of over four years of hard work while for the students it was a first step towards the beginning of an exciting journey of personal and professional growth that will be filled with challenges, opportunities and discoveries.
The temperatures soared high both days (around 32C) as did the spirit and energy amongst the students and the SSE team. Welcomed by Dean Abidi, the Vice Chancellor Dr. Durrani and the Rector Mr. Razzaq Dawood, the days were a whirlwind of activity. Students and their parents learnt about the vision of the school, the journey so far and the challenges ahead. Information sessions on the curriculum, campus life, extra-curricular activities, campus information technology, library services and hostel life were conducted. Students also met with their faculty advisors who will counsel them through their academic, social and professional metamorphosis over the course of their four years at SSE. All possible information required for navigating the first days and weeks as SSE students was made available.
And then the fun set in! The scavenger hunt arranged by the LUMS Alpha Society had students running all around campus scrounging for various items in a race against time. A movie screening was arranged for them to sit back, relax and enjoy while the Fresher’s Fair was a chance for students to join a club or society that gave full reign to their non- academic talents. Another important feature of the orientation was “the Infusion of Life” ceremony whereby students got on their feet, pulled up their sleeves and got knee deep into digging and planting their gifts to the SSE –around nine trees- the purpose of which was to imbibe in them a sense of giving back to society and also to commemorate the arrival of the first batch of the LUMS School of Science and Engineering.

SSE Workshop 2007   January 16, 2007
About the Workshop

The objective of the workshop was to try and understand what kind of science and technology-based research can or should be done at an institution like the LUMS SSE, given its desired goal of academic excellence as well as socio-economic impact. The generalized version of this problem was: how might research universities in developing countries balance the role of academia as the explorer, conservator and transmitter of knowledge with the desire for tangible impact on society?

The participants gained an appreciation of the SSE's vision. They were also be able to acknowledge the contributions of theoretical research applied to society; and the nature of contributions a school like the SSE can make to education and to Pakistan. Finally, while the discussion focused on the SSE, we hope the manner in which questions were framed can be generalized to building research universities in other developing countries.

SSE Workshop 2006   February 16, 2006
About the Workshop

LUMS SSE hosted a workshop on building research universities in countries like Pakistan, on February 16, 2006 at the LUMS Campus. The event coincided with the first ever visit of the LUMS SSE Advisory Committee to Pakistan (currently from MIT, Stanford, University of Chicago, and corporate leaders in the US (Advisory Committee). Other distinguished national and international participants were also in attendance.

One purpose of the workshop was to understand the role of research universities in creating knowledge for capacity building and socio-economic development. To do this, a full day of deliberations involving distinguished academics, industrialists, policymakers, opinion makers and supporters of the LUMS SSE was planned. We sought to establish the need for building quality research universities in developing countries; dedicating resources to research; balancing basic and applied research for development; and ensuring long-term commitment by supporters. We also attempted to understand implementation issues from other countries' experiences, such as: recruiting and retaining quality faculty; starting and sustaining quality research programs; creating the right research and educational environment; raising resources; mobilizing policymakers, and understanding the pitfalls of such initiatives.

The other purpose of the workshop was to help chart a course forward for LUMS. LUMS SSE is an attempt to build the first private research university in Pakistan, modeled on some of the best US schools. In February, we will have been in the development and planning stage for almost two years. This workshop was our first opportunity to engage a wide range of national, regional and international supporters in a more sustained dialogue with the SSE.

It was an exciting and thought provoking day. But since capacity was limited, the workshop was by invitation only.
