A Joint University-Industry Workshop on the Role of Nanomaterials in Drug Delivery and Cancer Treatment   July 28-29, 2008
The Role of Nanomaterials in Drug Delivery and Cancer Treatment
A Joint University-Industry Workshop, July 28-29, 2008

The unique chemical and physical properties of nanomaterials are stimulating joint ventures in academia, industry and government across the globe to explore their applications. Beyond new uses in electronics, optics, and catalysis, nanomaterials hold promise in the discovery and delivery of new drugs to combat various diseases including cancer. Research in this area is progressing from bench to clinic and, in a few cases, to commercialization.

This workshop will draw participants from industry, academia and government who will discuss advances and future challenges in this rapidly growing field, and propose ways in how it can stimulate joint university-industry research in Pakistan.

Exploring New Frontiers with SSE: A Future for Tomorrow's Scientists and Engineers   November 18, 2007
LUMS SSE hosts its first event for potential students
Exploring New Frontiers with SSE: A Future for Tomorrow's Scientists and Engineers

LUMS School of Science and Engineering (SSE) - Pakistan's first private, research school - hosted its inaugural student-facing event on November 18, 2007 at the LUMS campus. The event, attended by over a thousand people, proved to be a great success. The attendees included the most promising science students of Lahore accompanied by their parents and the institution heads of various schools from across the city.

The event commenced with a presentation by the Dean, Dr. Asad Abidi. He outlined the vision behind the creation of SSE, enumerated the curriculum for the six specializations being offered at SSE and gave an overview of how to navigate the SSE admissions procedure. He also introduced the first-rate faculty onboard that consists of some of the best scientists of Pakistan trained at the world's great institutes. The presentation was followed by a question/answer session during which the dean and faculty responded to several pressing queries put forward to them by the audience members.

SSE Workshop 2007   January 16, 2007
About the Workshop

The objective of the workshop was to try and understand what kind of science and technology-based research can or should be done at an institution like the LUMS SSE, given its desired goal of academic excellence as well as socio-economic impact. The generalized version of this problem was: how might research universities in developing countries balance the role of academia as the explorer, conservator and transmitter of knowledge with the desire for tangible impact on society?

The participants gained an appreciation of the SSE's vision. They were also be able to acknowledge the contributions of theoretical research applied to society; and the nature of contributions a school like the SSE can make to education and to Pakistan. Finally, while the discussion focused on the SSE, we hope the manner in which questions were framed can be generalized to building research universities in other developing countries.

SSE Workshop 2006   February 16, 2006
About the Workshop

LUMS SSE hosted a workshop on building research universities in countries like Pakistan, on February 16, 2006 at the LUMS Campus. The event coincided with the first ever visit of the LUMS SSE Advisory Committee to Pakistan (currently from MIT, Stanford, University of Chicago, and Corporate leaders in the US (Advisory Committee). Other distinguished national and international participants were also in attendance.

One purpose of the workshop was to understand the role of research universities in creating knowledge for capacity building and socio-economic development. To do this, a full day of deliberations involving distinguished academics, industrialists, policymakers, opinion makers and supporters of the LUMS SSE was planned. We sought to establish the need for building quality research universities in developing countries; dedicating resources to research; balancing basic and applied research for development; and ensuring long-term commitment by supporters. We also attempted to understand implementation issues from other countries' experiences, such as: recruiting and retaining quality faculty; starting and sustaining quality research programs; creating the right research and educational environment; raising resources; mobilizing policymakers, and understanding the pitfalls of such initiatives.

The other purpose of the workshop was to help chart a course forward for LUMS. LUMS SSE is an attempt to build the first private research university in Pakistan, modeled on some of the best US schools. In February, we will have been in the development and planning stage for almost two years. This workshop was our first opportunity to engage a wide range of national, regional and international supporters in a more sustained dialogue with the SSE.

It was an exciting and thought provoking day. But since capacity was limited, the workshop was by invitation only.
