One of the pleasures of a university education is the young person's first encounter with great books. While secondary school students will often read great literature, it is at university that they acquire the technical tools to read, and be inspired by, great science writings.
We want SSE students to learn from the very best textbooks. Not just the best books available in Pakistan, but the best books known to our faculty that have been published in the English language. We want these books made available to our students at affordable prices, so everyone may purchase a copy to add to their personal library. Many of these books are classics that have stood the test of time. We expect that this personal library will serve our students over their careers. Yes, this means that the Electrical Engineers should hold on to their Chemistry textbooks because, who knows, the next big thing in engineering may be molecular electronics. The Mathematicians may one day end up devising procedures to map genes, in which case their Biology text will come in handy.
We are pleased to say that our Library Bookshop will sell authorized imprints of high quality books. In some cases they are low-cost editions produced by the publisher for international markets; in other cases they are reprinted especially for us by Pakistan's National Book Foundation, under license from the original publisher.
In response to your requests, we are making these textbooks available for purchase in advance of the start of classes. You may want to brush up on certain subjects, or you may just be curious about the level at which SSE will teach its courses. Browsing these books should give you a good idea. We ask you to buy them only from the LUMS Bookshop; otherwise you might end up with the wrong edition, or even the wrong book
Our faculty has so far selected the titles below. In many courses, the instructor is specifying a primary textbook, listed first, and secondary textbooks that should aid the understanding of special or advanced topics. In the first year of studies, we expect you to acquire all primary and secondary texts. They were chosen to become permanent additions to your personal library.
Remember, the courses in the first year are required for all SSE students. So you will use all these books.

You may buy these books in one of two ways:
1. You may purchase these books by visiting the Bookshop located in the LUMS library. They accept cash payment. You can pick and choose the books you buy, although we suggest that you buy them all
2. You may buy them from the Library Bookshop by mail order. However, to keep the effort required to service mail orders under control, we must ask you to buy the complete set of books that is in stock now. The Bookshop will not accept orders for subsets of the list. They will ship you the set by TCS, and to cover the shipping cost you must add Rs 425 to the total price of books. You may submit your order to the address below, and enclose payment by cheque made out to "Lahore University of Management Sciences".
