Khurram Afridi
Project Director


As Project Director, Dr. Khurram Afridi is responsible for all aspects of the School of Science and Engineering (SSE). He has joined LUMS SSE on deputation from Techlogix - a 200 person information technology services company with operations in Hartford, Boston, Dubai, Karachi, Lahore and Beijing. As its Chief Operating Officer, he was responsible for the strategic direction, business development, and management of Techlogix, and helped the company grow consistently at an annual rate of 50% since inception in 1996. Prior to Techlogix, he has worked at Schlumberger, Philips Laboratories, Lutron, and JPL. At JPL he was part of the SURFSAT-1 design team - a NASA satellite that was launched into orbit in 1995. Khurram received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Caltech, and Masters of Science and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. He is the first non-European to have won the BMW Scientific Award for his outstanding doctoral research. He has published numerous papers; holds one US and international patent; and is a contributing author of the Power Electronics Handbook. He has been actively involved with higher education reform issues in Pakistan over the last few years and the LUMS SSE initiative from the beginning.

Zakeesh I. Khan
Manager, Communications & Outreach


Zakeesh Iqbal Khan has done her Masters in Mass Communication from Kinnaird College, following which she has been working as a Media and Communications Executive in Techlogix. She also has considerable national and international experience in the social sector-in a voluntary capacity, specifically in terms of advocacy and program design pertaining to women empowerment, education, skill-training and other development initiatives targeted towards youth. She is also Chairperson of the National Technical Committee on Women, Youth and Environment-FPAP. She is currently assisting the LUMS SSE team in its marketing and fundraising initiative.

Sarah Mahmood
Manager, Development


Sarah did her Masters in Mass Communications and Bachelors in Journalism and Psychology, both from Kinnaird College. She has worked at WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and Asiatic. She has also taught at the Lahore Grammar School. She joined the LUMS Science and Engineering Initiative Team initially as the Assistant Project Coordinator in 2004, but has since been promoted to the new role of development manager.

Hajira Kureshi
Manager, Admissions


Hajira Kureshi holds a BS and an MS in Computer Sciences from the Lahore University of Management Sciences, and also a BA in English Literature from Kinnaird College. Since 1997 she has been involved in various managerial and engineering roles in the local technology sector. She was the manager of the Quality Assurance department at Techlogix Ltd. till 2003, where she helped to define and implement ISO quality standards. Hajira has also been involved in voluntary work at Stanford University's Cantor Arts Museum, the Stanford Hospital and the United Nations' Association Film Festival. Her most recent undertaking was a compilation of the initial history of LUMS. She has joined the LUMS SSE team in the Admissions department.

Kiran Anwar
Executive, HR


Kiran Anwar did her Masters in English Literature from Kinnaird College in 2005. Since then she has been working in the area of Human Resource management with a particular focus on recruitment. Before joining the LUMS SSE team, Kiran worked with a recruitment firm, SKP Consulting, where she assisted with servicing clients like Netsol, Descon, ICC Engineering and U-Fone. Kiran has also completed a core course of MBIT from the University of the Punjab.

Saima Ali
Executive, Media


Saima Ali graduated with merit from the B.Sc. (Hons.) program at LUMS, with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Accounting & Finance. She has also worked as a Web Developer at Advanced Research Projects and Technologies (Arpatech) Pvt. Ltd. Prior experience includes serving as the President of the I.T. Society at her college and interning as a Graphic Designer at Kraysis, a private software house. Saima has also been a Teaching Assistant for several courses at LUMS, including Software Engineering and Project Management.

Graphic designing being her primary passion, she also loves dance choreography, music, gymming and fitness, glass painting and jewelry making. She is an active sportswoman, being the captain and color-holder of Netball at LUMS. Saima is also a Jiu Jitsu orange belt holder.

Zainab Siraj
Executive, Communications


Zainab Siraj did her Masters in English Literature from Kinnaird College, Lahore. Following the completion of her degree she worked as Project Coordinator in a non-governmental organization, AGHS Legal Aid Cell. During this time she also worked in the capacity of Country Coordinator for a sister organization South Asians for Human Rights. She has joined the LUMS SSE team as Communications Executive.

Neeka Babar
Executive, Admissions


Neeka did her Masters in Mass Communication from Kinnaird College in 2004. Her Bachelors was in Journalism and English Literature, also from Kinnaird College. She has worked at Mobilink, where she was responsible for Internal and External Marketing and Communications, and at the Beaconhouse Head Office, where she developed the English Language curriculum. She has also worked for Geo Television as a Production Associate.

Saadiya Waheed Raza
Senior Executive, Admissions


Also an Alumna of LUMS, Saadiya has been primarily associated with academia in research and technical capacities. Her interest lies in Open Source technologies for information management, particularly in the development and education sector. At SSE, her role is to provide momentum to the customization and deployment of core academic technologies required for all patrons of the School of Science and Engineering.

Nida Khalid
Executive, Event Management


Nida did her Masters in Mass Communications and Bachelors in Journalism and Psychology, both from Kinnaird College. She has worked at Evernew Concepts, AGHS Legal Aid Cell and South Asia Partnership. She has also taught at the Lahore Grammar School. She has joined the LUMS Science and Engineering Team as an Event Management Executive.

Durdana Bint-e-Ghazi
Executive, Student Services


Durdana did her Masters in Economics from the University of the Punjab. She has been associated with LUMS for the last seven years. She has also worked at Tarror Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. and Alipine International Pvt. Ltd. prior to joining LUMS.

She has been managing the office of the Vice Chancellor, LUMS, planning and coordination, maintaining records, organizing board meetings and other university events. Planning and problem solving are her strengths.

Though she has a Masters degree, the process of learning has not stopped and she continues to think of herself as a student. Durdana has joined the LUMS Science and Engineering Team as a Student Services Executive.

Amara Bashir

Amara Bashir did her MBA from University of South Asia, Lahore with a specialization in Human Resource. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences and Geography from Garrison College, Lahore. She has worked as a Marketing Executive in the Government Agricultural Marketing Department. She has also been involved in research projects such as examining the necessity for mobile phones in our daily routine. Currently she is working at the LUMS School of Science & Engineering as a Junior Admissions Executive.

Madiha Qayyum

Madiha Qayyum did her Masters in Political Science and International Relations from Government College University, Lahore. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Psychology from Gulberg College, Lahore. During her academic years, she was involved in various research projects. She investigated the area of conflicts and corporation in the city government of Lahore. She also researched the necessity of dowry in our prevailing society. Currently she is working at the LUMS School of Science & Engineering as a Junior Admissions Executive.

Annemieke W. Veenenbos
Senior Executive, Development


Annemieke Veenenbos did her Masters and Bachelors degree in Civil law both from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Before starting her studies at the University of Utrecht in 2000, she succesfully completed a one year program in English Literature from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

In the Netherlands, Annemieke worked as a Senior Relationship Manager at Fortis Intertrust (Netherlands) NV, a large international financial and corporate service provider. She was involved in the set up, and the management of securitisation structures alongside commercial activities and relationship management. Since arrival in Pakistan in October 2007, Annemieke has for some time been working as a staff writer for NGO World and as a fundraising consultant.

Annemieke has joined the LUMS School of Science and Engineering as a Senior Development Executive.

Zara Fateh Qizilbash
Manager, Undergraduate Education


Zara Fateh Qizilbash received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physics from the University of Oxford, specializing in Condensed Matter Physics and Atomic Physics. As the Manager of Undergraduate Education for LUMS SSE, she is responsible for the development of the physics curriculum and its integration with other disciplines in the SSE's core program of study. She is also engaged in designing the physics lab and developing lab experiments and coursework. Prior to joining SSE, Zara directed a turnkey project to establish a Greenfield fiberboard manufacturing plant and served as Project Manager responsible for developing a middle-income housing scheme. Zara is on the Board of Governors of Roedean School, Brighton.

Sohaib Shamim
Development Engineer


Sohaib received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physics from University of Oxford. As a Development Engineer, Sohaib is responsible for designing and developing physics undergraduate labs. Prior to LUMS, Sohaib has worked with Atmospheric Physics Department at Oxford and Plasma Antennas Ltd, a UK based high tech 'start-up' with a mandate to research and develop solid state antennas for civil and defence applications.

Bilal Musharraf
Bilal Musharraf completed his B.S. in Actuarial Science from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 1994. After graduation, he worked five years as an actuarial analyst for AIB in Boston, pricing and reserving automobile insurance (1994-1999). In 2000 he joined Watson Wyatt Worldwide (NYSE: WW) in Boston as an actuarial consultant, providing liability valuation analysis of employee benefit plans (Medical, Pension, Options) to the Fortune 1000 companies. He is currently a 2007 dual degree MBA/MA(Education) candidate at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford University School of Education.

Mavra Mushtaq Ahmad
Mavra Mushtaq Ahmad is currently doing her B.Sc. (Hons) at LUMS, working on a major in Accounting and Finance and a minor in Mathematics. She completed her O' levels from Beaconhouse School System in 2004 and sat for her intermediate board examinations in 2006. At LUMS, she was placed on the Dean's Honors List for the year 2006-2007. She also won the fastest fingers competition with the batch of 2010, in the year 2006. She is a member of the organizing team of the LUMS Model United Nations. Mavra enjoys social work and has visited the SOS Children's Hostel a number of times. Among her other interests are music, shopping, TV shows and movies. At LUMS SSE, she is working as a student volunteer since September 2007.

Mohammad Ali Raja
Ali received his Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from UET Lahore, a Master's in Computer Science from LUMS and has substantial experience in designing, managing and delivering on complex construction projects. His company's designs were selected for the Zero-Point Monument of the Lahore Islamabad Motorway Project and the stainless steel monument on GT Road in Shadra. As a construction management expert, he has delivered on-time and on-budget, among others: the NHA Building at Queen's Road, the Lahore Mall Road Underpass Project, and establishment of one of Pakistan's largest rock quarries. He is currently managing his own construction company in London, and helping the LUMS SSE build its infrastructure.

Salal Humair
Salal Humair currently works as a Principal Software Engineer at Optiant, Inc. (Boston, MA), a technology startup founded at MIT and focused on supply-chain design and optimization. He obtained his PhD and MS in Operations Research from MIT, an MS in Civil Engineering from MIT, and a BS in Civil Engineering from UET Lahore. His Master's research was on formulating conceptual design as a constraint satisfaction problem; doctoral research on yield management for telecommunications and his current work is in supply chain optimization. He has worked at CS First Boston, and interned at GTE Laboratories, IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, Schlumberger Austin Product Center, and Lucent Technologies, Bell Laboratories. He has also had significant teaching experience during graduate school as Head Teaching Assistant for a large undergraduate computing course at MIT.

Sohaib Khan
Sohaib Khan did his PhD in Computer Science from University of Central Florida and his BS in Electronic Engineering from GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Topi. He is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Lahore University of Management Sciences. His research interests lie in the fields of computer vision, image processing and pattern recognition. In particular he has done recent work on tracking and surveillance, video segmentation, face processing and video geo-registration. He has received more than Rs. 3.5 million as a research grant from a public sector organization for work on image registration. He is also providing consulting in the computer vision area to local public and private organizations. He has published more than ten journal and conference publications and has two book chapters to his credit. Dr. Khan was the recipient of Hillman Fellowship for excellence in graduate research, UCF (2001) and also received the merit-based Graduate Enhancement Fellowship, UCF (2000 and 2001).

Syed Talha Imam
Syed Talha Imam completed his B.Sc. (Hons) from LUMS in June 2008, with a major in Accounting and Finance and a minor in Economics. He did his A' levels from Saint Patrick's High School, Karachi. At LUMS, he was placed on the Dean's Honors List and graduated with distinction. Talha enjoys sports and was part of the school's basketball and volleyball team. At college, he was part of the Debating and Dramatics Society. He actively participates in social work and was part of the Care 'n' Share society at his college. He is currently working at Unilever Pakistan Limited, at a position of a Management Trainee as an Assistant Manager Customer Development. His previous experiences include internships at Ford Rhodes Sidat Hyder & Co. (partners of Ernst and Young Global) under Audit and at Telenet under customer service. Talha was serving as a student volunteer, helping in several activities associated with the SSE. He intends to continue his participation as a volunteer for SSE.

Zeeshan Syed
Zeeshan Syed received his S.B. and M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 2003. He is currently at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, working towards a Ph.D. His research interests span the domain of using computers to improve contemporary healthcare, with a focus on low-cost software solutions for developing countries. He is actively involved in a number of projects in association with clinical experts from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and holds a patent for his work in the area of automated auscultation and prototypical biological signal analysis. He is the recipient of the William A. Martin and Morris J. Levin awards in recognition of his research at MIT, and was featured in the 2003 MIT Technovators list of top innovators. He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi and the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry. He is also on the panel of experts consulting the PSEB on bioinformatics outsourcing and occasionally contributes articles to newspapers on higher education initiatives.
